COUNCILLORS have sensationally voted to reject a controversial Currumbin mosque despite their own legal advice warning them the decision would not stand up in court.

The Gold Coast City Council yesterday voted 9-6 in favour of rejecting its own planning committee’s decision to approve the development, setting the stage for a multi-million legal battle in the Planning and Environment Court.

It comes after fiery protests at the Evandale council chambers yesterday morning against the mosque proposed by Salasabil Charity organisation for a site on the corner Villiers and Coghill drives.
